What is a Climate Action Plan?

A Climate Action Plan is a document that sets out how your school will reduce its carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future. It outlines the steps you’ll take to use energy more efficiently, reduce waste, promote greener travel, and engage staff and students in climate-friendly actions.

Whether you're just starting your sustainability journey or already making great progress, your Climate Action Plan should be a practical, achievable roadmap tailored to your school's needs.

Why do I need a Climate Action Plan?

Under new DfE guidance, all schools are now expected to have a Climate Action Plan in place by September 2025.

But it’s not just about ticking a box - it’s a chance to lead by example, save money through energy efficiency, and help young people understand the importance of protecting the planet.

What should my Climate Action Plan look like?

A good Climate Action Plan should be clear, concise, and realistic. To meet the DfE’s expectations, your plan should include activities across all four key areas of their sustainability strategy:

  • Decarbonisation – reducing your school's carbon emissions

  • Biodiversity – protecting and enhancing the natural environment

  • Climate Education – integrating climate topics into teaching and learning

  • Green Skills, Adaptation & Resilience – preparing students with the knowledge and skills to thrive in a changing world

What type of activities do I need to log?

Your Climate Action Plan should include any activity your school is doing, or planning to do, that supports your climate and sustainability goals. With the free iAM Compliant plan, we’ve pre-loaded a wide range of activities commonly found in schools, so you can add them to your plan at the click of a button. These include activities such as:

  • Energy & Carbon Reduction

  • Procurement & Catering

You can also add your own unique initiatives - big or small. Every action counts towards your goals.
