Ever started an eLearning course and found yourself zoning out within seconds?
Sometimes, the voiceover is the culprit.
A dry, robotic or overly polished read can turn even the most engaging subject into a cure for insomnia. That’s why a natural delivery matters. It doesn’t just sound better; it helps learners stay interested, absorb information and remember what they’ve learned.
The tricky part? Sounding natural behind a microphone takes far more effort than simply being yourself. In fact, the harder you try to sound like a voiceover artist, the less natural you can become.
So, what makes a great eLearning voiceover? And why is it such an important ingredient in iAM Academy’s courses? Rosko Lewis, iAM’s long-term voiceover artist, gives his opinions below.
People don’t learn particularly well from robots, and I’m not really talking about AI here, but that’s another point we’ll come to later.
When a voiceover sounds too scripted, stiff or “announcery”, learners disengage. A natural, conversational tone makes information feel more approachable and easier to digest.
Think about how we absorb knowledge in real life. It’s rarely through someone reading at us in a monotone. We learn from people who sound human, vary their tone and speak in a way that invites us in. Ideally, they sound interesting—and perhaps even fun or funny when the subject allows it.
The script should guide the performance, but it’s the reader who brings that content to life.
Have you ever read a script that looked perfectly fine on the page but sounded unnatural when spoken?
Written and spoken language don’t always work in the same way. Before a script is recorded, it should be tested out loud. If a sentence feels clunky or forced, it’ll sound even worse through somebody’s headphones.
Conversational flow is essential in eLearning. If the words don’t sound natural, even the best voiceover artist will have to work much harder to keep learners listening.
Have you noticed how quickly your brain switches off when someone speaks too fast? Or how impatient you become when they drag out every sentence?
Good pacing is crucial for learning. Rushing through information makes it difficult to absorb, while delivering it too slowly can make a short course feel endless.
A skilled voiceover artist knows how to find the right balance, using pauses and changes in pace to give learners time to process important information without losing momentum.
There’s a time and place for a booming, polished announcer voice, but eLearning usually isn’t it.
Learners engage more when the narrator sounds like someone they might actually have a conversation with. A forced or over-the-top performance can create a disconnect, making the course feel less relevant, or even a little patronising.
The best eLearning voiceovers feel warm, personal, and authentic: more of a knowledgeable guide than a salesperson.
We’ve all sat through training where the speaker clearly has no connection to the material. It’s painful.
Authenticity makes an enormous difference in eLearning. If the narrator sounds as though they’re simply reading words from a page without understanding them, learners will soon tune out.
A great voiceover artist brings genuine interest and energy to a script without overdoing it. Whether the subject is leadership, wellbeing, workplace safety or compliance, the delivery should feel appropriate to the topic and the people taking the course.
Everyone thinks they can be a voiceover artist. What an easy job to have, right?
Great eLearning voiceovers don’t happen by chance. They come from professionals who know how to adjust their tone, pacing and delivery to suit the subject matter.
Investing in the right voice talent isn’t simply about finding someone with a nice voice. It’s about making sure the content works.
Voiceover artists often begin their careers by trying to sound like they think a voiceover artist should sound. They go all around the houses before realising that sounding completely and unapologetically like themselves usually produces the best results.
Believe it or not, sounding effortless is a skill.
AI-generated voices have developed quickly and can be useful in certain situations. However, learners can often detect when something is missing.
The rhythm, emotional nuance, humour and personality of a genuine performance are difficult to reproduce. Those subtle qualities help learners feel that they’re being spoken to, rather than simply having information delivered at them.
When clarity, connection and engagement matter, an experienced human voice can give learning the warmth and personality it needs.
A natural, engaging voiceover can mean the difference between someone absorbing information and zoning out completely. It isn’t just about sounding good; it’s about making learning more effective.
That’s why voiceover isn’t an afterthought in iAM Academy courses. It forms part of an approach designed to make workplace learning engaging, memorable and, dare I say it, enjoyable.
For best results, I recommend eLearning that keeps people listening and engaged, and avoids becoming the digital equivalent of watching paint dry.
